Udder Health Bangladesh have started pilot sampling for the new buffalo project. Recently we have visited “Government Buffalo Breeding and Development Farm, Bagerhat, Khulna”. During the 5 days visit we collected samples from the govt. buffalo farm and few house hold farms. Government buffalo breeding and development farm, Bagerhat is one of the largest buffalo farms in Bangladesh having about 500 animals. California mastitis test (CMT) and somatic cell count (SCC) were performed to screen out sub-clinical mastitis. Laboratory works will be carried out at medicine laboratory in CVASU.

David Ericsson, a student from “Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden” joined with UHB team in this visit. He will stay in Bangladesh for 2 months for his master’s thesis on sub-clinical mastitis in buffalo. He will continue his lab work both in Bangladesh and Sweden.

Dr. Muhammad Nazrul Islam, Assistant director (Manager), Buffalo Breeding and Development farm; Dr. Lutfur Rahman, DLO, Bagerhat (Ex. Assistant Director/Manager of Buffalo Farm); Dr. Md. Jahidul Rahman, ULO, Rampal; and Dr. Monzurul Hassan Shawon, Manager Govt. Sheep Farm, Bagerhat, helped us a lot during the visit to understand field condition and manage house hold farms for sample collection. They have a lot of experiences about buffalo management. Swapon babu and other workers of buffalo farm helped us to collect milk sample from buffalo and they also gives us information about breed, feeding, milk production and diseases for the questionnaire. It was impossible for us to collect milk sample without their help.

After completing sample collection UHB team has visited some historical places. We went to “Shat Gombuj Masjid” which was built in 15^th century by Khan Jahan (R.). We also visited largest mangrove forest “Sundarbans”. The team led by Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman, other members were Dr. Shuvo Singha, Dr. Sanjib Chandra Nath, Dr. Ovirup Bhushan Paul and David Ericsson.  Finally, we left Bagerhat with lots of good memories and funs.
