Buffalo meat: An Ideal Substitute for Beef

Meat is a highly nutritious food containing mostly protein, fat, vitamin, mineral and many other components. It contains all of the essential amino acids our body required for proper growth and development. The nutritional composition of meat varies upon species. People eat meat as a protein source. Human consumes a variety of meat, such as chicken, mutton, chevon, beef, pork, buffalo meat, and many others. The quality of meat depends on the percentage of its nutritious components. Buffalo meat is also known as carabeef. In Bangladesh, buffalo meat is not as popular as people are not aware of its food value. But buffalo meat is recognized as a healthy alternative to beef as it is leaner meat with similar taste and texture to beef. Buffaloes have a unique ability to utilize coarse feeds, straws and crop residues converting them into protein-rich lean meat. Buffalo meat is well comparable to beef in many of the physicochemical, nutritional, functional properties and palatability attributes, such as-

  • Buffalo meat has low calories, low fat and low cholesterol compared to beef. Which is good for diabetic patients.(click here)
  •  It contains considerably less fat than beef and makes it leaner meat. A low-fat diet is very important for cardiovascular health.
  • A different study shows that eating beef increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer because of its higher calories, fat and cholesterol level.
  • Compared to beef it contains both mono and polyunsaturated fatty acid, omega -3 fatty acids as well as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). CLA is a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid and used as a supplement for weight loss, bodybuilding, diabetes, and heart disease.
  • Buffalo meat contains more magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, and vitamin B12 than beef. These components are very essential for maintaining electrolyte balance in the body.
  • Buffalo is usually a grass-fed animal, as a result, it contains low fat, high protein and it is a good source of Beta Carotene (Vitamin A).(click here) It contains more good fat (polyunsaturated fatty acid) than beef.
  • Buffaloes are only fed grass and farm by-products, so they are free from Mad Cow Disease.
  • More pigmentation and less intramuscular fat (1-2% marbling compared with 3-4% in beef) make buffalo meat dark which possesses good binding properties and is preferred in product manufacture. 

There are many benefits to eating buffalo meat. It could be an ideal substitute for beef because of its nutritional value. Low calories and lean meat are very good for diabetes and heart disease.
