Updating Buffalo Project to FVM Colleagues

A meeting was held to update buffalo project activities to FVM senior faculty members at Dean’s conference room, CVASU on September 1, 2019.  The meeting was facilitated by Prof. Dr. Md. Ahasanul Haque, member, UHB. The project activities were updated by Prof. Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman, coordinator, UHB. Colleagues from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine present were  Prof. Dr. AKM Saifuddin, Prof. Dr. Md. Masudzzaman  Prof. Dr. Md. Alamgir Hossain,  Prof. Dr. Yousuf Elahi Chowdhury,  Prof. Dr. AKM Humayun Kober,  Prof. Dr Hemal barua,  Prof. Dr. Sharmin Chowdhury,  Prof. Dr. Emran Hossain,  Prof. Dr. Gous Miah,   Prof. Dr. Goutam Kumar Debnath; Prof. Dr. Md. Kabirul Islam Khan, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Mejbah Uddin;, Prof. Dr. AMAM Zonaed Siddiki, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Lutfur Rahman; Prof. Dr. M.A Hossain, Prof. Dr. Md. Rayhan Faruque, Prof. Dr. Azizunesa, Prof. Dr. Md. Lutful Ahasan, Dr. Sazeda Akter and Dr. Tanjila Hasan.

The meeting was started with the presentation of Prof. Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman on the activities and achievements of UHB. At first, he briefed the history of the collaboration that resulted in Udder Health and Buffalo Project. He discussed about the udder health activities like farmers training, field vet training, papers published from the project and recent visit of PUM representative to CVASU. Another important achievement of Udder Health Bangladesh is the development of clinical mastitis decision tree, which will help the practitioner to take treatment decision easily.

 Then he continued on the buffalo project funded form Swedish Research Council, Sweden named “Climate Change Mitigation by a Sustainable Water Buffalo Dairy Chain in Bangladesh”. Several developments of the project like masters and PhD student’s recruitment, supervision, their training, strengths and challenges of the projected were highlighted. After completing his presentation there was an open discussion where several questions were asked by the colleagues.

Prof. Dr. Goutam Kumar Devnath asked about the development of milk grading system depending on bulk milk somatic cell count and also suggested to build awareness about somatic cell count among farmers and involvement of milk processors with these activities. He also talked about the feasibility of buffalo farming in sugarcane and wheat cultivation area.

Prof. Dr. Paritosh Kumar Biswas discussed about the relationship between climate change and buffalo farming in the costal belt of Bangladesh. He said that water buffalo might be an alternative of cattle farming if sea water level rises due to climate change. Prof. Dr. Md. Alamgir Hossain asked why they made the clinical mastitis decision tree. Dr. Mizanur Rahman explained the use and application of the decision tree.

Prof. Dr. Lutfur Rahman, Prof. Dr. Hasanuzzaman pointed out the challenges of the buffalo project. Pfof.  Dr. AMAM Zonaed Siddidue, Prof. Dr. AKM Humayun Kober, Prof. Dr. Emran Hossain also asked relevant questions of the project.

After the discussion session, Prof. Dr. Ahasanul Haque concluded the meeting by summarizing the points discussed in the meeting and thanked all the colleagues for attending the meeting.
